The National WWI Museum and Memorial recently opened a time capsule that Kansas Citians buried 100 years ago in 1924 when they laid the cornerstone of the Liberty Memorial Tower. Two years later, the Memorial opened to the public in November 1926, with President Calvin Coolidge dedicating it in front of more than 150,000 people.

In 2026, the Museum and Memorial plans to create a NEW time capsule to celebrate 100 years!

We need your help to determine what should go into the new time capsule. What would you tell future generations? What objects best represent life today? If you could talk to people 100 years from now…what would you say?

Some considerations:

  • Significance: is this an item that has historical, cultural or social significance?
    • How does this represent World War I, the National WWI Museum and Memorial or Kansas City? How does it speak to the legacies of the community?
    • Does it reflect current social concerns, interests, values, trends? Is it an example of modern-day patriotism?
  • Preservation: how well will it keep in a sealed box for decades?
  • Size: will it fit into a box and leave room for other items?
    • The box used in 1924 was approximately 20”L x 12”W x 16.5”H.
  • Acquisition: where can the object be obtained? Is there a cost?
