Wheatless Wednesday

Wednesday, March 20 - 5 p.m. Billie's Grocery

This event has been canceled.

It unites us, divides us and is one of the most effective weapons in war: the control (and cooking) of food. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, a massive public education campaign was undertaken to motivate Americans to help “win the war in the kitchen.”

In major cities across the nation, local volunteer organizations held cooking, gardening and food canning demonstrations to teach people to replace important wartime commodities with alternative ingredients. We continue to use many of these recipes, and “Wheatless Wednesdays” initiatives of 100 years ago have seen a resurgence today with a push towards gluten-free and plant-based eating. Like fashion, food trends often return in style!

Join us at Billie's Cooking School for a hands-on cooking class led by one of their skilled chefs and Lora Vogt, Vice President of Education and Interpretation, for a tantalizing taste of the wartime world. Hosted in conjunction with the online exhibition War Fare.

$125 per ticket | Billie’s Grocery | 3216 Gillham Plaza, Suite 100, Kansas City, MO 64109
