Special Topics in History | Americans and WWI: A World Made Safe for Whose Democracy?

Tuesday, June 30 | 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Zoom Conference

Join the National WWI Museum and Memorial, in conjunction with Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, to explore how Americans from many backgrounds served, sacrificed and shaped the nation during the First World War. This session looks at the varied experiences of Americans – African American troops, Indigenous communities, women supporting the war effort, and veterans returning home – revealing how individuals helped advance the nation’s call to “make the world safe for democracy,” even while the country continued to strive to realize that promise at home.

Participants will engage with primary sources, personal accounts and practical classroom strategies that help students connect individual stories to broader civic themes and develop strong historical analysis skills.
