Soldiers often described World War I as months of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror. To keep morale up, troops of all nations, militaries and factions turned to a wide variety of entertainment: anything from gambling and card games, to sports, music, food and drink, to organized theatrical performances and dances.

Entertaining the Troops gives a peek into the quiet (and not-so-quiet) hours of the soldiers’ lives, whether they were waiting on the battlefield or partying in Paris.
