FYI Book Group: The Facemaker (Aug. 20)

Sunday, Aug. 20 - 11 a.m. R.A. Long Learning Center

Join the Kansas City Public Library, in partnership with The Kansas City Star, the National WWI Museum and Memorial, KU Medical Center and Linda Hall Library for this a book- of-the-moment selection of "The Facemaker" for discussion in Kansas City’s FYI Book Group.

WWI brought technological marvels and a newfound terror to the twentieth century. Many soldiers did not return home and many who did were burned, battered, and broken in unimaginable ways. One pioneering plastic surgeon, Harold Gillies, dedicated himself to healing the soldiers in his care. His efforts to repair faces led to miraculous strides in medicine and restored the damaged spirits of soldiers. Gillies's story is compelling and inspiring, a blend of science, imagination, and art.

Attendees will have a brief tour of the Museum and Memorial's Bespoke Bodies exhibition before the book discussion. The author, Lindsey Fitzharris, will join the conversation via video call with David M. Megee, M.D. associate professor of plastic surgery at KU Medical Center. Copies of the book will be provided to participants in advance of the discussion date.
