Bicycling through Battlefields: One Man’s Journey into the Past

Monday, May 27 - 12:30 p.m. National WWI Museum and Memorial

A chance discovery in his late father’s belongings propelled Brett Hawkes into the battlefields of the Western Front. Following the photographic trail of 1st Lt. Alton Crockett Hawkes' service in northern France with the American Expeditionary Forces, Brett cycled through the same route that his grandfather marched a century earlier, meeting recent generations of townsfolk that now lived in the once-unrecognizable rubble of rural villages.

Ride along with Hawkes for a special Memorial Day lecture as he delves into the details of his journey and shares the photographs that resurrected an old soldier’s memory, never to be forgotten.
